THORNTON | If the Coaches Invitational is any indication how the end of the season might play out, McKensi Austin and the Regis Jesuit girls swim team has a lot to look forward to.

In the same pool at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center where the Class 5A girls state swim meet is scheduled for in February, the defending state champion Raiders fought through tiredness and illness to finish third in the 5A standings of the multi-classification meet.

Austin provided the biggest highlight for Regis Jesuit — which also finished third at the Coaches Invitational last season — nailing her three dives in the finals to win the event by just 0.3 of a point over St. Mary’s Academy’s Alexa Beckwith. Beckwith led the competition through prelims with Austin fourth, but the Raiders’ sophomore nailed her final dive to get to 484.45 points to Beckwith’s 484.15.

“When I’m in meets, I don’t like to score-watch or think about that stuff, I just wanted to raise my place,” Austin said. “It was a really nice surprise when they told me I won by point-three. A lot of meets come down to within a point, so the little details count.

“You have to stay focused all the way to the end.”

Junior Taylor Wilson and sophomore Lindsay Painton each placed in two championship finals, sophomores Kaylie Breslin and Amy Lenderink finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 yard butterfly and Sydney Cutler, Emily Protz, Samantha Smith, Jennae Frederick, Haley Baldwin and Kellyn Toole also scored individually for Regis Jesuit.

Grandview — depleted by illness, which forced standout Madison Dirks to leave the meet early — finished with 36 points to tie for 14th.

The Wolves didn’t have any individuals in the championship or consolation finals, but both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams placed ninth.

Smoky Hill, which saw senior Lizzie Wiley get selected as winner of the Hoyt Brawner Award as the top senior swimmer/scholar, scored 17 points to finish 22nd. Wiley qualified for the 5A state meet in three different events during the meet, junior Julia Song scored individually with a 16th-place finish in the 50 freestyle and the Buffs also earned points in both freestyle relays.

Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest and Gateway had swimmers compete in the prelims, but none made it back to the finals sessions.
