Softball: Browne, Grandview continue roll against rival Cherokee Trail

AURORA | Freshman Courtney Browne doesn’t know much yet about the fierce rivalry between Grandview and Cherokee Trail, but she entered the fray in a big way Wednesday.

The Wolves’ right-hander pitched seven innings of four-hit ball against the Cougars Wednesday in a 4-0 Grandview victory that gave it an early leg up in the Centennial League championship chase.

Browne — who didn’t walk a batter and struck out four — also had two of the Wolves’ six hits off three Cherokee Trail pitchers and drove in a run in a four-run second inning that provided the only runs of the game.

Sophomores Kat Maynard and Ande Troutman and freshman Loghan Thomas also had RBI for Grandview, which improved to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in league play in the first season under new coach Dave Thies.

Darian Higens, Emily Sparks and Morgan Worthington all had doubles, but were left stranded for Cherokee Trail, which lost its fourth straight game after winning four in a row to begin the season.

Browne allowed a double to Worthington to open the game, but put down the next three hitters for the Cougars to escape the threat. She also worked around Sparks’ double with one out in the third inning and Higens’ leadoff two-bagger to open the fourth. No Cherokee Trail baserunner made it to third base.

Cougars starter Christian Bobian put Grandview down 1-2-3 in the first inning, but ran into trouble after hitting Emily Supercynski to open the second and allowing a base hit to Shy Calicchia. Brittney Fernandez sacrificed the runners along and Bobian hit Jessica Alexander to load the bases.

Thomas and Browne came through with back-to-back singles to plate two runs and knock Bobian out of the game.

Maynard drove in another with a sacrifice fly against reliever Taylor Leill and Troutman followed with a run-scoring double. Leill got Kelsey Biaggi to ground out to strand runners at second and third base.

Browne had the only other hit for Grandview in the final three innings off Kayla Mashburn.
