GOLDEN | The Regis Jesuit girls soccer team hung around with higher-seeded Ralston Valley deep into the second half of Tuesday’s Class 5A first round state playoff contest, but couldn’t pull off the upset.

The 25th-seeded Raiders and eighth-seeded Mustangs were deadlocked with less than 10 minutes left, but the floodgates opened for Ralston Valley, which scored three times to break the tie and secure a 4-1 win at the North Area Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Brooke Metcalfe scored in the 66th minute to lift Regis Jesuit into a tie that lasted until the final flurry for Ralston Valley, which moves on to a second round contest against No. 9 Pine Creek, which held off No. 24 Castle View 4-3.
Coach Will Cropper’s Regis Jesuit team finished the season 7-9.
