AURORA | The offense the Grandview girls soccer team has been working on for the entire season came through in a big way to open the Class 5A state playoffs.
The 13th-seeded Wolves had been kept off the scoreboard in two of their last three regular season contests — both against outstanding opponents — but they followed that by scoring their second-most goals of the season Tuesday evening in a 6-0 win over No. 20 Adams City.
Grandview got goals from five different players and could have had many more if not for the stellar play of Eagles’ freshman goalie Berenice Torrecillas as it moved into Friday’s second round. Coach Brian Wood’s team anticipated a possible rematch with Centennial League rival and fourth-seeded Cherry Creek, but the Bruins were upset by No. 29 Arvada West in a game decided on penalty kicks.
Senior Sam Nunez scored twice for the Wolves, while junior Kenzie Dodd and sophomores Katie Reynolds, Maya Sandler and Lexi Yi also tallied for Grandview, which peppered Torrecillas with 35 shots.
