AURORA | In the midst of a lengthy winning streak, the Smoky Hill girls soccer team has scored key goals in late moments or overtimes.

The Buffaloes did things a little bit different in Monday’s non-league contest against visiting Monarch at The Swamp, but the result was the same: another victory.

Freshman forward Brooke Sosa scored in the first five minutes of the game and Smoky Hill’s outstanding defense held strong for the remainder of the game in a 1-0 win stretched the Buffaloes’ unbeaten streak to nine games. Junior goalkeeper Megan Kneefel was credited with 14 saves for coach Matt Guglielmo’s team, but none of the chances the Coyotes generated were particularly dangerous.

Junior Brynell Yount earned the assist for Smoky Hill (9-1), slipping a pass that Sosa finished for her sixth goal of the season.

Kneefel and a defense keyed primarily by senior Cassidy Robinson, sophomore Sami Brooks and freshmen Emily Goodson and Britteny Lewis played unwaveringly in the back on their way to the team’s sixth shutout in 10 games.

The effort meant Smoky Hill didn’t need any more late game heroics from sophomore Sam Howshar, who had delivered the game-winning goal in four of the Buffs’ past five games, including a big 2-1 overtime victory at Arapahoe on April 17.

Howshar hit a goalpost and had a number of scoring chances in the second half, but pushed a couple of shots just high over the crossbar.

The Buffaloes opened a tough week that includes a total of four games, as Centennial League home contests against Overland (4:30 p.m. Tuesday) and Grandview (4:30 p.m. Thursday) follow the Monarch game, while Regis Jesuit visits at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
