AURORA | The Grandview girls soccer team eventually sailed on in the Class 5A girls state soccer playoffs, but not before getting a strong opening test from underdog Hinkley.

Bolstered by a pair of goals in the late stages of the first half by Avianne Burris and Bailey Cook that broke open a close game, the second-seeded Wolves put some distance between themselves and the 31st-seeded Thunderbirds and kept it that way in a 5-0 victory at rain-soaked Legacy Stadium.

Cook had her first hat trick of the season and Megan Mueller also scored for coach Tari Wood’s Wolves (14-1-1), who advance to get a rematch with Centennial League rival Smoky Hill in the second round. The 15th-seeded Buffaloes posted a 3-1 win over No. 18 Doherty at Stutler Bowl.

Hinkley got an outstanding effort in the goal from senior keeper Areslie Rodarte — who was credited with 20 saves — but coach David Nickoloff’s improving team saw its season end at 11-4-1 overall.
