THORNTON | A difficult last hole impacted the final finish of Vista PEAK’s Sophia Capua at the Class 4A girls state golf tournament, but the freshman still posted a top-10 result in her inaugural season.

Capua made a birdie on Hole No. 17 in Wednesday’s second round at Thorncreek Golf Club to put herself in position to finish as high as fifth in the individual standings, but a quadruple bogey on No. 18 instead dropped her into a four-way tie for ninth.

With rounds of 79 and 80 (which included three birdies), Capua finished with a two-day total of 159.

Capua — the first Vista PEAK player to compete in the state tournament since 2019 — also finished nine strokes in front of Northfield’s Makaela Swanson, who she had competed with at the top of every one of the six City League meets all season.

The 4A tournament — which was delayed by weather in the second round — was dominated by Erie, which had a 1-2 finish in the individual standings from Logan Hale and Hadley Ashton and the Tigers won the team competition by a whopping 49 strokes.
