Girls Golf: Vista PEAK sending team to Class 4A state tournament

LAKEWOOD | The Vista PEAK girls golf team’s rise continued, as all four of players from the Colorado 7 champions advanced to the Class 4A state tournament through Monday’s Metro-West Regional.

Coach Michael Dougherty’s team had all four golfers — Kyree Conaway, Kylee Shepard, Sam Chaney and Olivia Lopez — place in the top 21 in play at Fox Hollow Golf Course to earn their way into into the May 23-24 4A state tournament at Pueblo Country Club.

The Bison posted a team score of 272 to finish fourth, as Colorado Academy ran away with the team title at 229, followed by Golden (249) and Valor Christian (266).

Vista PEAK had the first two state qualifiers in program history last year in Shepard and Chaney and finished eighth as a team, but they moved up four spots in the team standings and doubled their state contingent.

Sophomore Kyree Conaway made a huge jump with her team-best score of a 10-over-par 82, a far cry from the 115 she shot at last season’s regional tournament at Raccoon Creek G.C. Lopez shot 137 a year ago, but carded a 98 to tie for the last individual qualifying spot in the massive regional, which had golfers from a whopping 24 teams.

Shepard shot 94 and Chaney 96 to earn their way back to the 4A state tournament, where Chaney finished in a tie for 51st last season and Shepard ended up 78th.
