CENTENNIAL | The opportunity to win a third straight Class 5A girls state golf championship is there for Regis Jesuit, which qualified as a team out of Monday’s 5A Central Region tournament.

First-year coach Eric Ptolemy’s Raiders grabbed one of two automatic team spots in the May 23-24 5A state tournament at CommonGround Golf Course with a three-stroke victory over Denver East

Regis Jesuit was paced by junior Jaclyn Murray with a 2-over-par 74, while senior Mary Weinstein finished fourth with her 80 and seniors Ali Timlin and Brooke Pulver shot 83 and 90, respectively, at South Suburban Golf Course.

Gateway and Aurora Central also played in the regional, but neither had enough finishers to record a team score.

Led by Murray and Weinstein — both key members of its 5A state championship teams in 2014 and 2015 — Regis Jesuit held off a charge for the regional title from the Angels, who had the individual medalist with an even-par 72 from Sarah Hunt.

Murray had a very consistent day, as she never got higher than 2-over and was on pace for a 73 until a bogey on No. 18. Murray made two birdies on the day.

Weinstein had a solid round save for double bogeys on two par-5s — No. 5 and No. 11 — and she recorded a pair of birdies to open her back nine.

Timlin, who also played on last season’s state winner, also had a solid day, while Pulver’s score might have been better save for a very tough Hole No. 15 in which she lost five strokes.

Gateway’s Carmen Silva was the only other Aurora player with an official score, as she carded a 109.

Aurora’s contingent for the 5A state tournament at CommonGround Golf Course includes a state title hopeful in Grandview (which finished second at the Southern Regional in Colorado Springs) in addition to Smoky Hill freshman Amisha Singh.
