LAKEWOOD | Girls golfers who had enjoyed a spring of favorable playing conditions got hit with rain, cold and wind Monday with state tournament berths on the line.
With a field including Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley and Rangeview, the Class 5A Metro West Regional at Fox Hollow Golf Course teed off at 8 a.m. and the leaders made it through 11 holes before the tournament was halted due to unplayable conditions.
The tournament is expected to be played from the start at 8 a.m. Thursday at Raccoon Creek.
The 4A Metro West Regional at West Woods Golf Club was stopped even earlier — after just two holes — due to the downpour. Regis Jesuit and 22 other teams will try again at 7:30 a.m. May 14.
Aurora’s other teams— Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest, Grandview, Overland and Smoky Hill — are scheduled to play in the 5A Metro East Regional on Tuesday at Aurora Hills Golf Course, site of the 5A state tournament. Pending any changes due to weather, the tournament is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m.
Eighty-four state tournament positions are up for grabs in each classification and spread out among four regionals, with a proportionate number qualifying from each group based on the total participants in each division times the number of regional tournament participants, divided by 84. The winning team in each regional automatically qualifies for the state tournament.
The 5A state tournament is May 21-22 at Aurora Hills, while 4A plays at Boomerang Golf Course in Greeley.
