Girls Golf: Murray, Weinstein open girls 15-18 Optimist International Golf Championships in Florida

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA | Former Regis Jesuit teammates Jaclyn Murray and Mary Weinstein had vastly different opening rounds, yet finished in roughly the same position after play Monday at the girls 15-18 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.

Though she didn’t have a birdie on the day on the Fazio Course at the PGA National Resort & Spa, Murray was very consistent and she made par on 15 of 18 holes, with only a pair of bogeys and a double on the par-5 Hole No. 4. The Regis Jesuit senior-to-be finished at 4-over-par 76 to tie for 15th in the 117-player international field.

Weinstein, meanwhile, racked up four birdies — including on the par-5 Hole No. 18 on the The Squire Course — but her scorecard also included seven bogeys and a double bogey on the par-5 Hole No. 5. The 2016 Class 5A individual state champion and soon-to-be Regis University player sits a stroke behind Murray in a tie for 23rd overall.

Four other Colorado players are in the field, with Highlands Ranch’s Alexis Chan sitting next among state players after shooting 80.

Murray is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. ET on Hole No. 1 on the Squire Course along with players from Georgia and South Carolina, while Weinstein goes off on Hole No. 1 of the Fazio Course in a threesome with two players from Thailand.

The co-leaders of the tournament — Yae Eun Kim of Santiago, Dominican Republic, and Elizabeth Nguyen of Pinehurst, N.C. — both shot 3-under 69s in the opening round.
