AURORA | The depth of the Grandview girls golf team is beginning to show itself at the right time of the season.

Bolstered by the performance of senior Sharae Lewis, the Wolves posted a six-stroke victory over Cherry Creek Wednesday at Fitzsimons Golf Course, which vaulted them into the league lead with one tournament remaining.

Lewis carded a season-best score of 76 on the par-71 course to finish a stroke ahead of sophomore teammate Amy Chitkoksoong for top honors as Grandview finished with a team score of a plus-34 318 to finish in front of the Bruins, who came in at 324. Coach Mary Danielson’s Grandview team — the defending league champ — came into the tournament behind Cherry Creek by a stroke.

Junior Caitlin O’Donnell posted a seventh-place finish with an 80 to help the Wolves make their rise.

The Centennial League finale — rescheduled due to weather — is set for 1 p.m. May 13 at Meadow Hills Golf Course.

Paced by eight-over Brooke Kramer’s 79, Cherokee Trail finished fourth, while Eaglecrest came in sixth. Overland and Smoky Hill — which was missing sophomore standout Amisha Singh due to illness — didn’t have enough players to post a team score.

Lewis’ previous best in a Centennial League 18-hole tournament was an 83, but she bettered that significantly with a round that included two birdies, including one on the par-5 Hole No. 18 that ended up as the difference.

Chitkoksoong — the individual league leader — made the turn at plus-2, only to run into trouble on the first five holes of the back nine, where she saw her score rise by five strokes. An eagle on the par-5 Hole No. 15 helped her turn it around.

Kramer’s best 18-hole league score of 79, which tied her for fifth individually, saw her record a pair of birdies to somewhat offset two double-bogies.

No matter what the result of the final tournament, Cherokee Trail is firmly entrenched in the No. 4 spot in the Centennial League standings behind Grandview, Cherry Creek and Arapahoe.

Julia Shaver’s 90 led Eaglecrest, which will finish in the No. 6 spot.

The final league standings are used to determine which of the May 8 5A regional tournaments for each team.
