COLORADO SPRINGS | The Grandview girls golf team’s hopes of winning a Class 5A state championship remain intact as the Wolves qualified as a team for the 5A state tournament Monday.
Led by senior Morgan Sahm, who shot a six-over-par 78 to finish in a tie for second individually at Colorado Springs Country Club, Grandview finished as the runner-up behind Ralston Valley at the 5A Southern Regional.
Coach Mary Danielson’s Centennial League champion Wolves also got an 81 from freshman Amy Chitkoksoong, plus an 86 from freshman Morgan Ryan and an 88 from sophomore Caitlin O’Donnell to finish a comfortable nine strokes in front of Legacy for the second automatic team qualifying spot.
Eaglecrest finished 10th among 12 scoring teams, while Rangeview was one of two teams without enough finishers to record a team score.
Sahm — who earned her fourth career trip to state — opened the regional with a birdie on the par-5 first hole and completed the front nine at plus-2. She sat 4-over through 14 holes before back-to-back bogeys pushed her to the plus-6 that left her tied with Legacy’s Jennifer Hankins for second, five strokes behind medalist Jordan Remley of Ralston Valley.
Chitkoksoong, the Centennial League individual champion, couldn’t come up with a single birdie during her regional round, which included a double bogey on the par-3 Hole No. 4 and bogeys on seven other holes.
Julia Shaver led Eaglecrest with a 107, while Emily Leday’s 128 paced Rangeview.
Aurora’s contingent for the May 23-24 5A state tournament at CommonGround Golf Course includes a team from two-time defending state champion Regis Jesuit (which won the Central Region) in addition to Smoky Hill freshman Amisha Singh.
