FORT COLLINS | For the first time since 2008, the Class 5A girls state golf tournament includes a player from Smoky Hill.
Freshman Amisha Singh ended an eight-year absence for the Buffs by qualifying for this season’s 5A state tournament with her sixth-place finish at the 5A Northern Regional at the Ptarmigan Golf & Country Club.
Singh — who finished third in the Centennial League individual standings — carded a nine-over-par 81 to comfortably earn the first state tournament berth for coach Laurie Steenrod’s Smoky Hill program since Kathy Hong in 2008.
Aurora’s two teams in the Northern Regional field, Smoky Hill and Hinkley, didn’t have enough finishers to record a team score, but Singh represented the city very well with her play.
Singh made par on her first five holes and finish the front nine at 2-over-par, which included her lone birdie on par-4 Hole No. 7. She found the back nine more difficult, as she had a bogey or double bogey on five of the final nine holes.
Lexi Thompson posted the lone finish for Hinkley as she finished with a 106.
Aurora’s contingent for the May 23-24 5A state tournament at CommonGround Golf Course includes Singh, plus teams from Regis Jesuit (the Central Regional champion) and Grandview (the Southern Regional runner-up).
