ENGLEWOOD | With only one hiccup, the Vista PEAK girls golf team handled the Colorado 7 season in dominating fashion.

Of the five league tournaments, coach Michael Dougherty’s Bison lost only one — which came in soggy conditions earlier in the week — but finished strong with their performance in the league finale Thursday at Broken Tee Golf Course.

Led by sophomore Sam Chaney’s plus-21 93, which put her just a stroke off the lead individually, Vista PEAK posted an eight-stroke victory over Fort Morgan and sealed the league championship, the first for a girls team in the school’s short history. The golf result surpassed the school’s girls tennis team, which finished second at the Colorado 7 league tournament a week earlier.

Chaney, who had a putt on No. 18 that spun around the lip of the cup and out and would have tied her for first place had it fallen, was followed by junior Kylee Shepard with a fourth-place total of 100, while freshman Kyree Conaway’s tied for fifth overall at 101. All three players received first team all-league honors.

The Bison — just two seasons removed from a dead last league finish — came into the tournament with a three-point lead on Fort Morgan in the Colorado 7’s point system, which rewards five points for a win in the tournament, four points for second place, three for third and so on.

Vista PEAK needed just a top-three finish to secure the championship and did so in style, as it finished with 24 points to Fort Morgan’s 20. Strasburg, which is only part of the Colorado 7 in golf, finished third with 15 points, followed by Elizabeth with eight and Englewood with three.

Next up for the Bison is a trip to the Class 4A Metro-West Regional Monday at Raccoon Creek G.C., where they will seek their first state qualifier.
