CARBONDALE | Sam Chaney and Kylee Shepard hold a special distinction at Vista PEAK Prep, as the pair are the first two girls golfers ever to qualify for the Class 4A state tournament.
Chaney, a sophomore, and junior Shepard teed off their special opening round at picturesque River Valley Ranch Monday and got to see what it was like to play with the best in the state.
While they won’t be in contention for a state championship when Tuesday’s second round begins at 8:30 a.m. — weather permitting — there were some positives for coach Mike Dougherty’s young Bison.
Chaney made par on three holes in her front nine, but found the back nine considerably tougher as she finished at plus-27 99. She’ll see that back nine first thing in the second round, as she is scheduled to tee off on Hole No. 10 at 8:57 a.m. Tuesday.
Shepard recorded a birdie on par-4 Hole No. 4 to highlight her round, which she finished at plus-37 109. The junior’s tee time for Tuesday is 10:09 a.m. on Hole No. 10.
Cheyenne Mountain held a five-stroke lead over Colorado Academy in 4A state team chase, while Jefferson Academy star Jennifer Kupcho carried a three-stroke advantage over Cheyenne Mountain’s Kylee Sullivan into the final round.
