AURORA | Regis Jesuit had a commanding lead in the chase for the Continental League girls golf championship, so Tuesday’s cancellation of the scheduled final tournament at Red Hawk Ridge G.C. had no bearing on the final result.
Through four tournaments, the Raiders led Rock Canyon by 39 strokes and that’s the way it will end, as league officials were forced to scrub the last tournament due to high winds.
According to Douglas County coach Dan Singleton, the league doesn’t have time to reschedule the final meet, so the total scores from meets at The Club at Ravenna, The Pinery, Highlands Ranch G.C. and Glenmoor C.C. make up the final standings.
Regis Jesuit finished first in three of the four tournaments — coming in a stroke behind Rock Canyon at Glenmoor — and posted a total of 1,320 strokes to come in well in front of the Jaguars’ total of 1,359.
Coach George Miller’s Raiders also had two of the top three finishers in the individual standings in junior Sydney Gillespie and sophomore Mary Weinstein, who came in No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, behind Highland Ranch standout Samantha Barker.
Gillespie recovered from an 85 in the opening tournament at Ravenna to card rounds of 77 at The Pinery (tying her with Highlands Ranch’s Jenni Chun for first), 74 at Highlands Ranch G.C. and 76 at Glenmoor, while Weinstein finished as the medalist for two of the four tournaments. She shot an even-par 72 at Highlands Ranch G.C. to finish first and also carded a 2-over 74 to win the Ravenna tournament as well, also coming in at 89 at The Pinery and 80 at Glenmoor.
Freshman Jaclyn Murray also finished in the top 10 in individual scoring average for the Raiders.
In the new postseason format this season — which divides teams among four 5A regionals based on final league finish — Regis Jesuit’s first place result puts it in the Central Regional, slated for May 5 at Broken Tee G.C.
Joining the Raiders among city teams in the Central Region are East Metro Athletic Conference runner-up Rangeview and EMAC No. 6 Gateway.
