LOVELAND | In the ending nobody wanted, the Class 5A girls state golf tournament is official after just one round.

Steady overnight rains between Monday’s first round at The Olde Course and Tuesday’s scheduled final round left pooling water and conditions deemed unplayable by the course and officials from the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Results from the opening round became official after an early morning meeting to judge course conditions, which meant Regis Jesuit comes home with its second straight 5A state championship trophy. Between the trio of senior Sydney Gillespie, junior Mary Weinstein and sophomore Jaclyn Murray, coach George Miller’s Raiders turned in a team score of plus-5 221 and will win the title by 13 strokes over Continental League rival Rock Canyon.

“The course was deemed unplayable by course officials,” said Jenn Roberts-Uhlig, CHSAA assistant commissioner who was acting as site director, told CHSAA.Now. “The result is that, unfortunately, we have to cancel the second day of the tournament.”

Gillespie and Grandview junior Morgan Sahm — who shot a plus-1 73 that included an eagle Monday — sat in the top three individually and were within striking distance of first round leader Gillian Vance of Dakota Ridge. Gillespie was just two shots back of Vance, who she played with in the opening round, with Sahm five strokes off the pace.

Grandview finishes the tournament tied for fourth overall with a team score of 243.

Senior Caroline O’Donnell shot an 83 and junior Emily Jung carded an 87 in the opening round for coach Mary Danielson’s Wolves.

Player and teams met at the clubhouse Tuesday morning and received awards.

The Raiders got the team trophy, while Gillespie, Sahm, Weinstein (tied for 7th) and Murray (tied for 9th) got medals for top-10 finishes.
