AURORA | Morgan Sahm has known for awhile where she wanted to play college golf and she let that decision be known Friday.
The Grandview High School senior-to-be couldn’t find anything better than what she found on a visit to the University of Northern Colorado in March, so gave her verbal commitment to the Division I school in Greeley.
Sahm has finished in the top nine individually at the Class 5A girls state golf tournament in all three of her varsity seasons thus far and helped the Wolves to a program-best fourth-place finish as a team at the abbreviated state meet in May.
“I visited UNC in March and that’s when I was convinced it was the right place for me,” Sahm told the Sentinel. “The coach and the team are very approachable and nice.”
Sahm — part of the 2015 Aurora Sentinel All-City Girls Golf Team after a third place finish — said she had also considered the University of Denver, the University of Denver and a few other schools in a recruiting process she termed “very stressful…because of how big of a decision it is.”
Playing a role in her staying close to home is her relationship with coach Terry Stearman and the fact that she can’t bear to leave Colorado.
“I’m truly so excited to play Division I golf for UNC and I can wrap up my senior year at Grandview and be able to continue to play golf somewhere I’ll love.”
With the Bears, she’ll get reacquainted with Jordan Sunset, who she played against in some junior tournaments when she was younger.
Sahm — who has had an outstanding summer and played in both the U.S. Girls’ Junior in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (where she missed the cut by just one stroke) — has big plans for her senior year with the Wolves.
Not only would she like to win the state title individually, she believes coach Mary Danielson’s Wolves — who return three of the four players from the fourth-place team with a talented freshman class to arrive — could make a run at knocking off two-time 5A state champion Regis Jesuit.
“We’ll have a really strong team this year and we are very dedicated to work hard through the year,” she said.
