LAFAYETTE | Regis Jesuit’s Sydney Gillespie continued a busy season of golf with a strong performance at the CWGA Junior Match Play Championships.
The junior-to-be — based out of Highlands Ranch G.C. — rolled past Kylee Sullivan of Country Club of Colorado 5 & 4 on July 11 to essentially finish fifth in play at Indian Peaks Golf Course.
Seeded sixth, Gillespie lost a tight quarterfinal to Thorncreek G.C.’s Sarah Hankins, who won the final hole to post a 2 up victory July 9. Gillespie rebounded the next day with a 1 up victory over Boulder C.C.’s Megan McCambridge as she won the 15th hole to break a tie match and held on.
Gillespie had much less trouble in the championship flight consolation final as she took the lead on Sullivan on the second hole and built on it until winning holes No. 13 and 14 ended the match.
Rangeview senior-to-be Julia Kim qualified for the first flight quarterfinals, but lost to Dani Urman 6 and 5 and then fell in the consolation bracket to Gillian Vance 9 and 8.
Sophomore-to-be Mary Weinstein — Gillespie’s Regis Jesuit teammate — recorded a pair of upsets in the second flight championship bracket to reach the title match, but couldn’t stop Jennifer Hankins of Thorncreek G.C., who won 1 up.
Grandview sophomore-to-be Emily Jung lost both of her matches in the fifth flight bracket.
