AURORA | For the first time since the coronavirus pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the Regis Jesuit field hockey team has a loss appearing on its record.
The two-time defending state champion Raiders hadn’t tasted defeat in their last 32 games — a span in which they were 30-0-2 since a loss to Cherry Creek on March 31, 2021 — but couldn’t complete a spirited second half comeback in a 2-1 loss Saturday to Colorado Academy at Lou Kellogg Stadium.
Coach Spencer Wagner’s Regis Jesuit team (5-1-1) shut out Colorado Academy 1-0 in last season’s state championship game, but the Mustangs (6-1) put up two goals in the first half against the Raiders and standout senior goalie MaryKate Berg— both of which came from state goals and points leader Zoe Martin — and managed to hang on.
It was the first of two meetings between the teams, which will also face off in the regular season finale Oct. 19 on the Mustangs’ home field.
Junior Bebe Ghiselli scored her first goal of the season on a pass from senior Carly Kennedy in the third quarter for Regis Jesuit to cut the deficit in half, but the Raiders couldn’t get the equalizer they felt was coming in the final quarter.
Regis Jesuit has a break in the schedule until another big contest, which comes on the road at Kent Denver (7-1) on Sept. 23.
