Fall 2012 All-City: Improved Grandview, Regis Jesuit bolster All-City Field Hockey Team

Aurora’s lone state playoff qualifier, Regis Jesuit, and Grandview split the 10 spots on the 2012 Aurora Sentinel All-City Field Hockey Team, as selected by the Sentinel with balloting from city coaches.

Coach Spencer Wagner’s Regis Jesuit team was Aurora’s lone playoff qualifier, but was stopped by Colorado Academy in the first round for the second consecutive season. In Aurora play, the Raiders went 1-1 against Grandview and 2-0 against Smoky Hill.

Regis Jesuit was improved at each level of the field, starting up top with senior forward Faye Hubregsen, who led the team in goals and assists.

The senior co-captain had particular success against another Aurora team, Smoky Hill, as she scored two of her six goals in one game against the Buffaloes and had half of her four assists in the other contest.

Junior Caroline Law (5 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore Emma Walker (4 goals, 3 assists) added some punch out of the midfield, while senior co-captain Raina Cazier and junior Megan Meckling keyed a defensive unit that recorded two shutouts and allowed just 25 goals in 16 games.

Grandview finished with an Aurora-best eight wins on the season — including a split of two games with Regis Jesuit and 1-0 against Smoky Hill — as coach Chris Strater’s team was predicated on defense.

With junior Kayla Wayne in the goal, the Wolves posted a pair of shutouts and allowed one goal or fewer on six occasions, including giving up just a single tally to Cherry Creek. Senior co-captain Serena Johnson stood out with her remarkable tenacity and skill on defense.

Senior Alex Smith and sophomore Emily Neff — the team’s leading scorer — in the midfielder were major drivers of Grandview’s offense, while junior forward Lorraine Tuti’s speed was a major concern for opposing defenses.

Notes: A very young Smoky Hill team was winless in the 2012 campaign, but a variety of players earned honorable mention All-City distinction, led by sophomore goalie Baylee Candalarie. She was joined by senior Kaitlyn Brunner and sophomore Libby Boles in the midfield and junior Jessica Schnitzer on defense.
