High Five: Grandview’s Adaeze Obinnah

Adaeze Obinnah has a big personality to match her sizeable frame.

The affable 6-foot-1 senior post player is a key figure on a Grandview girls basketball team ranked No. 3 in Class 5A in a preseason coaches poll. The Wolves return Obinnah and nearly the entire roster from a team that made it to the 5A Elite Eight for the first time in school history.

Obinnah was a first team All-City performer last season when she averaged 10.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, both team highs. Off the court, Obinnah is a state placer in the shot put.

With a 4.5 GPA, Obinnah is on track to be the valedictorian of Grandview’s senior class. She has signed a national athletic scholarship offer with Rice University.

What is your favorite high school memory, athletically or otherwise?

My favorite high school memory would probably be beating Heritage last season to move on to the Elite Eight for the first in school history.

What is the biggest sacrifice you have to make to play your sport?

Sleep! Between my schoolwork and basketball practices, I don’t get much of it.

What’s the best piece of advice ever given to you in sports or in life?

My parents taught me to pray about everything, and it if it is God’s will, it will happen. If not, there must be something even better coming along!

Are you a leader? If so, what do you think makes a good leader in yourself or others?

I would say I’m a leader, but not very vocally. I’m not the person yelling at everyone to work their hardest. I think a good leader leads by example.

Do you have any quirks or superstitions when it comes to your sport or in life in general?

When we pray before a game, I hate praying for a win, no matter who we are playing. I just pray that we play our hardest and to our potential.

If you listen to music before a game, what gets you most ready for competition?

“Never Say Never” and “Born To Be Somebody” by Justin Bieber both get me pumped up! It seems odd…but it works!

What’s a sport you’ve always wanted to try, but haven’t and why?

Poms! I wish I could dance so badly, but I’m a bit too tall and far from light on my feet. Plus, our poms team is always so good. I’d look really dumb trying out!

If you could pick a person living or dead to spend a day with, who would it be and why?

Shirley Temple! I have seen all of her movies, and I used to be obsessed with her. I’d just want to sing and dance with her all day.

Other than sports, do you have another true passion in life and if so, what is it and why?

I love God! He’s blessed me with so much and I’m so thankful for the amazing people he has put in my life and opportunities he’s given me.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

I see myself working the business side of some high-end fashion company. I’ll be 27? That seems like enough time!
