AURORA | Grandview junior Lauren Betts — considered the top prospect in the country by many in the Class of 2022 — announced her verbal commitment to the Stanford women’s basketball team Jan. 13 via social media.
The 6-foot-7 Betts, who helped lead the Wolves to a Class 5A state championship game wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic last season, tweeted her decision for her future college career to be with the Cardinal, which currently sit atop the NCAA women’s basketball rankings and are led by Tara VanDerveer, who became the sports all-time winningest coach this season.
When she signs, Betts — who averaged 17.8 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.9 blocked shots per game last season — will become the latest local addition to a Stanford team that already has former Regis Jesuit star Fran Belibi to go with other ex-Colorado prep standouts Ashten Prechtel (Colorado Springs) and Jana Van Gytenbeek (Cherry Creek).
Coach Josh Ulitzky’s Grandview team already has a Division I signee on its roster this season in Addison O’Grady, who is headed to the University of Iowa.
Practice for the girls basketball season begins Jan. 18.
