AURORA | The Grandview and Regis Jesuit girls basketball teams could be on a collision course in the Class 5A state playoffs.

Aurora’s top two teams, both 21-2, received No. 1 seeds in the brackets released Sunday by the Colorado High School Activities Association, with the Centennial League champion Wolves topping the 12 teams in the Alice Barron Region and the Raiders — who shared the Continental League title — heads the Kaye Garms Region.

The teams are on the same side of the bracket, so they could meet on March 14 in the state semifinals if both can advance out of the respective regions. Regis Jesuit knocked off visiting Grandview 59-53 on Jan. 12.

Only five Aurora teams made the 5A playoffs, with Smoky Hill, Cherokee Trail and Rangeview joining the Wolves and Raiders.

Regis Jesuit and coach Carl Mattei — who picked up his 200th victory with the program in the second-to-last game of the regular season — have a first-round bye and play host to the winner of the first round contest between No. 8 Smoky Hill (9-14) and No. 9 Liberty (11-12).

The other three top seeds in the Raiders’ region are No. 2 Cherry Creek (17-6), No. 3 Horizon (16-7) and No. 4 Prairie View (17-6).

Coach Josh Ulitzky’s Grandview team — which has finished alone or tied for first in the Centennial League for three straight seasons — has the first No. 1 seed in program history. After a first-round bye, the Wolves will play host to the winner of a first round contest between No. 9 Legend (9-14) and No. 8 Chatfield (10-13) on March 1.

The other three top seeds in the Wolves’ region are No. 2 Denver East (19-4), No. 3 Chaparral (17-5) and No. 4 Rock Canyon (17-6).

At 9-14, Smoky Hill — which finished tied with the 10-13 Cougars for fifth place overall in the Centennial League — plays host to Liberty on Feb. 26.

With a No. 9 seed, Cherokee Trail goes on the road against No. 8 Pine Creek (10-13), with the winner earning the right to play at the top seed in the Sharon Wilch Region — 19-4 Highlands Ranch — in the second round.

Rangeview just made it into the playoff field, as a 10-13 mark earned the Raiders a No. 12 seed in the Rhonda Blanford-Green Region. First up is a road date at fifth-seeded Loveland (17-6), with the winner set to play at No. 2 Fruita Monument (17-2) in the second round.
