DENVER | The smiles were genuine, both for the result and the performance, for the Grandview girls basketball team Thursday afternoon.
The top-seeded Wolves had not played to their internal standard in the previous two rounds, but displayed more of how they hoped to play in a gritty 39-35 victory over fifth-seeded Pine Creek, which had knocked off Centennial League nemesis Cherry Creek in the previous round.
Senior Sienna Betts finished with 18 points, while fellow senior Deija Roberson added 14 and sophomore Ava Chang six for nearly all the scoring for Grandview, which is back in the state championship game for the third time in the past four seasons.
The Wolves will play in the 6A final at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the same venue against either No. 7 Legend or No. 13 Riverdale Ridge.
Earlier in the day, Betts was crowned Colorado’s Gatorade Player of the Year for the third consecutive time. She joins Michaela Onyenwere as the program’s three-time winners.
