AURORA | The Cherokee Trail girls basketball team got back on the winning track in Colorado play with an 84-38 road victory at Vista PEAK Prep Tuesday night.
The Cougars — coming off a sixth-place finish at the Denver East Holiday Ball — played withouts senior regulars Madeline Gibbs and Delainey Miller, but were able to jump out to a 12-point lead after one quarter and continued to build on it the rest of the way.
Junior leading scorer Aaliyah Broadus made the last basket of the first quarter and drained a 3-pointer to to start the second quarter for coach Tammi Traylor-Statewright’s Cherokee Trail team, which improved to 7-5.
Coach Howard Payne’s Vista PEAK Prep team — which came in after a strong win over Fruita Monument — got a strong opening quarter from senior Amirah Pena, but scored in single digits in three of the four quarters. The Bison sit 3-5 overall.
Vista PEAK Prep plays on the road at Eaglecrest Jan. 9, while Cherokee Trail plays host to Erie on Jan. 10.
