AURORA | A busy girls basketball tournament season began with Rangeview and Smoky Hill taking the first turns among city schools.

The Buffaloes came away with a sixth-place finish at the eight-team Battle of the Rockies tournament at Rocky Mountain High School, as they fell to Sterling 35-28 in the consolation championship game Dec. 7.

Smoky Hill finished 1-2 at the second annual tournament overall after a 52-34 first-round loss to Longmont and a 61-44 victory over Westminster in the consolation semifinals, improving its overall place by one spot from 2012.

Junior Janay Henderson finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds and senior Brooke Zimmerman also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards in the Buffs’ victory over the Wolves.

Coach DeWayne Brandon’s Smoky Hill team has a non-league road game at Denver East on Dec. 10 ahead of its next tournament, the Dec. 11-14 Douglas County Holiday Tournament.

Rangeview finished eighth in the eight-team Rock Canyon/ThunderRidge Tournament for the second straight season.

The Raiders (0-4) ended up on the short end of a 49-26 decision against Doherty in the Dec. 7 seventh-place game at ThunderRidge High School, which came on the heels of a 92-26 loss to Rock Canyon in the opening round and a 52-32 defeat at the hands of Cherry Creek in the consolation semifinals.

Coach Chris Dolan’s Rangeview team heads to the Dec. 12-14 Littleton Tournament along with Aurora Central.

Other upcoming tournaments involving Aurora girls basketball teams include Cherokee Trail and Grandview taking part in the Grandview Invitational Dec. 11-14; Gateway at the Ponderosa Invitational Dec. 10-14; the Regis Jesuit girls heading to Phoenix Dec. 18-21 for the Nike Tournament of Champions; and Gateway and Cherokee Trail entered in the Heritage Memorial Hoopla Tournament Dec. 19-21.
