Girls Basketball: Lewis, Gold Team stave off comeback by Onyenwere, Blue to win Show all-star game

DENVER | Michaela Onyenwere won the Most Valuable Player award at The Show all-star game last season in her debut and she made a case to win it again Saturday if her Blue Team had completed a significant comeback.

The Grandview sophomore poured in a game-high 16 points, including seven in the final two minutes, but the Blue Team came up on the short end of a 67-64 contest to the Gold Team — which included Regis Jesuit senior Jess Lewis — at Pepsi Center.

Fossil Ridge’s Brooke Pemberton scored 11 points for the Gold Team and was selected as the MVP of the game featuring 20 0f the top girls prep basketball players from around the state as selected by Denver Nuggets officials and a panel of sportswriters and sportscasters.

Lewis, who kept Regis Jesuit’s long tradition of representation in the 15-year-0ld Show event going, scored her only points of the game on a 3-pointer with just over three minutes left that helped the Gold Team prevail. She played significant minutes with guard Sydni Brandon from the Grand Junction team that beat her Raiders in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

Onyenwere, who was credited with eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals, nearly brought the Blue Team all the way back from a 10-point deficit in the closing minutes. She was fouled on a defensive rebound in a two-point game with 25.8 seconds left and missed one of her two free throw attempts as the Blue Team could only get within one.
