AURORA | In Gateway’s winning formula Friday night, Q was the variable.
With two quarterbacks out due to injury, Q — senior Quintavis Styles — made his first start under center for the Olys and made the most of it, rushing for 188 yards and four touchdowns in a 28-12 Gateway victory that spoiled Hinkley’s Homecoming festivities at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.
Styles — who typically plays running back for the Olys — scored touchdowns on runs of 55, 26, 18 and 5 yards and added a 2-point conversion run to help coach Ashour Peera’s team bounce back from a tough 1-point loss to Rangeview in the annual Anvil game to improve to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Aurora League.
Hinkley — which lost to Gateway 69-0 last season — held a 12-7 lead at halftime on second quarter touchdowns by Brandon and Bryson Compton, but missed a number of opportunities to score in the second half and quarterback Austin Ruiz found himself under constant pressure from the Gateway defensive line.
Jaron Cohen’s Thunderbirds dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in league play going into their regular season finale, a 6 p.m. Oct. 25 contest against rival Aurora Central at APS Stadium.
