AURORA | In a battle of elite football teams, defense and special teams often make the difference.

That was especially the case in miserable conditions Thursday night at Legacy Stadium, when cold and driving rain made things especially unpredictable.

Regis Jesuit (2-1) — ranked No. 7 in the most recent Associated Press Class 5A poll — got a special teams touchdown from Justice Taylor, a defensive score from Connor Sinks and rushing touchdowns from Alec Barnes and Trevor Williams in a 27-7 non-league win over No. 2 Cherokee Trail.

Senior Izaiah Lottie broke a 54-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but that was it for the Cougars (2-1), who averaged 40 points in their first two games.
