AURORA | The Regis Jesuit football team needed a test before the Class 5A state playoffs arrive and they passed it with flying colors Friday night.
The Raiders — ranked No. 6 in the most recent Associated Press 5A poll — dealt No. 7 Mountain Vista its first loss of the season and took over sole possession of the top spot in the Continental North Division with a decisive 35-7 victory at Lou Kellogg Stadium.
Senior quarterback Matt Houghtaling threw touchdown passes to Jack Stoll, Emmanuel Dejesus and Jack Wiegand and senior running back Alec Barnes ran for 136 yards and scored twice as Regis Jesuit improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the North Division.
Sparked by the play of Eddie Gonzales, Chase Konkel and Ace Escobedo along the line, the Raiders’ defense shackled the fast-pace offensive attack of the Golden Eagles, who were kept from scoring in double figures for the first time all season and scored their only touchdown with the outcome decided.
Regis Jesuit closes out the regular season with a game against Fruita Monument on Oct. 25 at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.
