Football: Rangeview powers way past Gateway to stretch Anvil streak to six years

AURORA | For three straight years, a one-point margin was all that kept the Anvil in the hallways of Rangeview.

The Rangeview football team claimed the traveling trophy for the sixth straight time in a vastly different way Friday night at Aurora Public Schools Stadium with a decisive 44-0 South Metro League victory over rival Gateway.

Coach Dave Gonzales’ Raiders piled up 30 points in the first quarter and invoked the 40-point running clock mercy rule early in the second quarter as they improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the South Metro League.

Sophomore Max Gonzales rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns, senior quarterback Quaid Vincent rushed for a touchdown and threw one and Rangeview scored twice defensively — on a safety and fumble returning touchdown by Jaelon Wright — and on special teams with DeVante’ Wheaten’s punt return to cruise to victory.

Coach Shane Ward’s Gateway team, which lost quarterback Rashaud Beauford to injury in the first quarter, managed just 40 yards of total offense and fell to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Rangeview’s victory was the most lopsided in the series with Gateway since the Raiders posted a 49-0 victory in 2007. In the last three seasons, Rangeview had won 16-15 (2011), 25-24 (2012) and 7-6 (2013).
