Football: Overland holds off Rangeview for 27-24 victory

AURORA | A much-anticipated game between two nearby city programs added another intriguing chapter to its budding rivalry.

Donovan Carver’s 71-yard touchdown return following a blocked field goal turned out to be the difference as Overland survived a late Rangeview rally to hold on for a 27-24 non-league victory at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.

OVERLANDRay Rountree threw for 175 yards and a touchdown and ran for one and Jeremiah Collins had 108 yards of total offense and also scored for coach Seth Replogle’s Trailblazers, who won the third straight meeting between the teams and improved to 2-1 on the season.

In his second varsity start at quarterback, Rangeview’s Braden Cook threw for a pair of touchdowns, including a 68-yard bomb to DeVante’ Wheaten with under a minute left to make it a three-point game.

Elijah Reed returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a 77-yard touchdown and Dan Worst made a 30-yard field goal for coach Justin Hoffman’s Raiders, who dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Overland, which got shut out in its previous game against Columbine, pushed out to a 20-7 lead early in the second quarter after Rountree threw a 20-yard touchdown to Brent Halliburton and Collins and Rountree scored on a 1-yard runs.

Worst connected on a field goal attempt with two minutes left in the first half to make it a 10-point game and Reed brought the deficit to just three with his kick return score.RANGEVIEW

The Raiders had a chance to tie the game up on a Worst field goal attempt late, but the Trailblazers blocked the 37-yard attempt and Carver took it all the way back to the end zone.

Cook found Wheaten — who made two catches for 101 yards and had an interception and a return for a score that was called back — to tighten the game, but Rangeview couldn’t recover the onsides kick.

Overland travels to play at Legend at 1 p.m. Sept. 19, the same day Rangeview welcomes Grand Junction to APS Stadium at 5 p.m.
