Football: Gateway blanked by Mullen 41-0 in season opener

AURORA | Though the Gateway football team feels much better about its preparation for the 2015 season, Thursday’s opening contest against Mullen looked nearly identical to 2014 solely in scoreboard terms.

The Olys suffered a 40-6 defeat to the Mustangs last season in the first game under coach Shane Ward — who took over the program on an extremely short timetable — and ended up with a 41-0 loss in the rematch at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.

Mullen’s Shamond Hamilton took the opening kickoff back 97 yards for a touchdown and the Mustangs struck for 13 points in the opening quarter and 28 in the second period to take control of the ballgame.

Marcus McElroy rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries and Mullen outgained the Olys 416-42 yards of total offense. Hamilton added a 5-yard run and a 44-yard catch from quarterback Jovan Tafoya with two seconds left in the first half for his third touchdown.

Running back CJ Sanders rushed for 30 yards on 10 carries and Tommy Boles caught three passes for 22 yards for Gateway, which had just three first downs.

The Olys look to snap a now 12-game winless streak — which stretches back to the regular season finale of 2013 — when they play Grandview at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at Legacy Stadium.
