AURORA | In another round of the boxing match between the Eaglecrest and Ralston Valley football teams, the Raptors came up on the short end again, but didn’t get knocked out.

On the same Legacy Stadium field where the Mustangs outslugged Eaglecrest 44-43 in a Class 5A state playoff quarterfinal game several months earlier on a game-ending 54-yard field goal, it was coach Mike Schmitt’s Raptors’ turn to give Ralston Valley a scare.

In his first varsity start, sophomore quarterback Jalen Mergerson threw four touchdown passes — including two in the last two minutes — but Eaglecrest’s last gasp effort came up short in a 33-27 victory for the Mustangs.

Sophomore Victor Garnes caught two of Mergerson’s touchdown passes, while Charles Roberts and Darian Williams also snagged scores for the Raptors, who couldn’t overcome a mistake-filled minute in the third quarter that saw a one-point lead turn into a 13-point deficit.

Eaglecrest plays Highlands Ranch at Shea Stadium on Sept. 12.
