Football: Defensive-minded Grandview snaps skid against Cherokee Trail

AURORA | Two straight losses to rival Cherokee Trail were quite enough for the Grandview football team.

The Wolves — ranked No. 2 in the latest Class 5A Associated Press poll — snapped the skid against the Cougars Thursday night with a 21-12 Centennial League victory at Legacy Stadium.

Senior running back Chukwuma Obinnah rushed for 188 yards and a touchdown, senior quarterback Cody Summers rushed for a score and threw a touchdown pass to Jalin Bishop and the defense held the Cougars in check for most of the night as Grandview continued as Aurora’s lone unbeaten team at 6-0.

Izaiah Lottie rushed for 102 yards and both touchdowns for Cherokee Trail, which fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial League. Coach Monte Thelen’s Cougars, who suffered a 23-0 loss to Cherry Creek a week prior, have lost consecutive games for the first time since Week 2 and 3 of the 2011 season.

Lottie’s 18-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter put Cherokee Trail in front 6-0, but Grandview reeled off the next 21 points to place a firm grip on the contest.

Summer’ keeper early in the second quarter and Aiden Pirrin’s extra point gave the Wolves the lead for good and Obinnah expanded the edge with his 74-yard rumble up the left sideline into the end zone in the third quarter.

Following a lengthy back-and-both battle of the teams’ excellent defenses, Summers found a wide open Bishop for a 49-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 21-6.

The Cougars responded with their second scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter, when Lottie dove across the goal line to finish a 12-yard touchdown run. Cherokee Trail went for the two-point conversion to try to get within seven points, but Grandview linebacker DeAndre Shorts sacked quarterback Blake Butler on a blitz before he could get the pass off.
