AURORA | Since suffering a last-second loss in its season opener, the Cherokee Trail football team has taken out its frustrations on its last two opponents.

The Cougars steamrolled past Gateway 48-0 Saturday afternoon at Aurora Public Schools Stadium, following up a 42-0 demolition of Fort Collins the previous week to improve to 2-1 going into a Week 4 showdown with nearby Regis Jesuit (3-0).

Senior quarterback Aric Johnson opened the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown run and threw three TD passes in a 28-point second quarter as coach Monte Thelen’s Cherokee Trail team continued to rebound from an opening week loss to Chatfield.

Cameron Currington and Izaiah Lottie each scored two touchdowns for the Cougars, while Cameron Smith also got into the end zone and finished just shy of 100 yards rushing and backup quarterback Tyler Penney’s only pass went for a score.

Gateway — which came into the game 2-0 — generated just 166 yards of total offense as it suffered its first loss under new coach Ashour Peera.
