Football: Aurora Central moves to 2-0 with rout of Thornton

AURORA | Just two games into the 2015 football season, Aurora Central has already managed to match its win total in each the past three seasons.

Trailing Thornton 7-0 midway through the first quarter Friday night at Aurora Public Schools Stadium, the Trojans scored the last 48 points of the game in a 48-7 rout to get to 2-0. Aurora Central hasn’t opened the season 2-0 since 2007.

Tarrell Gissendanner Jr. caught touchdown passes from Jalil Grimes and Dominick Jackson in the second quarter — the last one coming with just 24 seconds left in the first half — and Aurora Central rode a 21-point second quarter into the lockerroom.

Romunn Albright kept the momentum going for coach Travis Peeples’ Trojans by returning the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown and Taevon Jordan rushed for two touchdowns to cap a 20-point quarter.

Grimes, who rushed for three touchdowns in Aurora Central’s season opener, capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a nine-yard jaunt into the end zone.

Sisco Aranda piled up 102 yards rushing for Aurora Central, who finished with 386 yards rushing and 451 yards of total offense.

Aurora Central plays host to Sand Creek at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at APS Stadium as the Trojans look to get to three wins for the first time in eight years.
