LAKEWOOD | Back in the state field hockey playoffs for the first time since 2010, Smoky Hill refused to go quietly.
Coach Natalie Foerster’s eighth-seeded Buffaloes held top-seed and unbeaten Colorado Academy scoreless through one half of Friday afternoon’s state quarterfinal contest, but the Mustangs scored quickly in the second half and tacked on two more late goals for a 3-0 victory.
Maddie Webster scored twice and Jill Murphy also tallied for Colorado Academy (15-0-1), which advanced to the semifinal round on Oct. 28 and awaits the winner of the game between fourth-seeded Golden (8-2-5) and third-seeded Palmer Ridge (10-3-1) scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
Smoky Hill’s season comes to an end at 6-6-3 overall, with the win total marking one more than the program had in the previous four seasons combined.
