Fall Sports: Boys golfers tee off new prep sports season

AURORA | Monday’s boys golf practice opens the 93rd season of sanctioned prep sports by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Boys prep golf teams begin tryouts, three days before they are allowed to begin tournament play.

Coach Craig Rogers’ Regis Jesuit team seeks to extend a streak of three straight Class 5A boys state golf championships with three players who were part of last season’s title team — seniors Spencer Painton, Jake Kelley and Chris Korte — all expected to return.

Three of Aurora’s other 5A state qualifiers from last season — Grandview’s Devyn Solano and Cherokee Trail’s Mitch Nevin and Ben Knapp — were underclassmen.

This season’s 5A boys state golf tournament is scheduled for Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at CommonGround on the edge of Aurora.

Other fall sports begin practice on Aug. 12, while boys tennis begins play Aug. 15 and softball on Aug. 16. Opening day for the remainder of the fall sports — football, volleyball, boys soccer, boys and girls cross country, field hockey and gymnastics — is Aug. 29.
