AURORA | Summer was about anything but relaxation around Aurora Public Schools Stadium, as work continued on a massive overhaul of the district’s hub of athletics.

That work was on full display Saturday morning, when the stands were loaded and spectators and middle school athletes alike got a look at the changes of the venue located on the campus of Hinkley High School, Aurora’s second-oldest high school.

It marked the completion of a roughly $3 million project that started in the spring spearheaded by APS Athletic Director Casey Powell and was made possible by a 2016 voter-approved bond supplemented by the district’s athletic budget.

“I couldn’t have asked for more, the stars literally aligned at the right time,” Powell said. “They were still dropping infill on Friday and I was waiting to pull the benches out until the last minute. It literally was perfect timing.”

Powell, APS Superintendent Michael Giles and members of the school board were on hand as all 14 of the district’s middle schools and P-8 schools were represented during an event that was free to attend.

The first high school event at the venue is on Aug. 23 when the district’s girls flag football teams will all get together for games, while the first varsity football game will be Aug. 29 when the Hinkley football team plays host to Englewood.
