AURORA | The seventh time was the best for the Grandview girls cross country team at the Aurora City Championship meet.
The Wolves claimed the team title of the annual meet — which stretches back to 1981 — for the seventh time in program history and did so with a perfect score despite brutally hot conditions Thursday at the Aurora Sports Park.
Senior Emersen Hensler earned the city individual championship and led a parade of teammates across the finish line as Grandview posted a total of 15 points to cruise to victory in a meet in which not all Aurora area programs were present.
Sophomore Skylar Hensler, senior Isabella Rodriguez and juniors Nicole Aarons, Sloane Smith and Andrea Pilkington finished second through sixth, respectively, while Eaglecrest sophomore Thea Downing claimed the last All-City first team position with a seventh-place result.
Last season’s Aurora City champion — Cherokee Trail star Madison Lange — did not compete as the Cougars (also the 2025 girls team champion) were set to run in the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede meet on the state championship course at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs on Saturday.
That opened the door for a new individual girls winner and that went to Hensler, who became the fifth different runner to win the title in the past five years.
Hensler wasted little time in taking the lead and held steady throughout the entire race to reach the finish line at the end of the 3.1-mile course in a time of 20 minutes, 42.53 seconds, which was nearly a full minute in front of sophomore sister, Skylar (21:40.26).
Emersen Hensler became Grandview’s seventh all-time city girls champion, as she joined 2023 winner Julia Pace along with Anna Swanson (2019), Kaitlyn Mercer (2017 & 2018), Brie Oakley (2016), Erin Norton (2013) and Jamie Anderson (2008) in program history.
For the Wolves as a team, it was the third city title in the past six seasons, but the first since 2023.
Eaglecrest’s top runners — including 2024 Aurora city champion Jenna Winn — also did not compete as they were entered in the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede, built Downing made sure the program was represented on the All-City first team.
Downing ran a time of 27:07.85 and was followed across the line by sophomore Avery Stephenson in eighth (in a time of 29:18.82) to help Eaglecrest to a total of 45 points.
Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley and Vista PEAK Prep — which had the ninth-place individual finisher in junior Yeabsira Hagos — had individuals compete, but did not have enough runners to earn a team score.
