COLORADO SPRINGS | The state cross country meet called Aurora its temporary home for two years, but it’s moved on to a new venue in 2012.

Three city teams got a look at the new course at the Norris Penrose Equestrian Center — which will be the site of the state meet on Oct. 27 — on Friday at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede, and Grandview junior Erin Norton and Smoky Hill senior Rachael Chacko took a liking to the 3.1-mile course.

Norton and Chacko finished 3rd and 7th, respectively, in the Class 5A girls race and tuned up for an individual showdown on Sept. 6 with the individual city title at stake in the Aurora City Championship meet. Norton crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 52.5 seconds and came in only behind Cherry Creek’s Jordyn Colter — the defending 5A state champion — and Pomona’s Alaina Anderson. Chacko was 7th in 20:21.8.

The Grandview girls were 6th with a score of 236, as senior Brooke Genovese added a 15th-place individual finish. Regis Jesuit came in 15th (425) and Smoky Hill 26th (598) among 30 teams.

Monarch, Fort Collins and Fairview finished in the top three team spots.

Grandview also led the three city teams in the boys race, coming in 14th as a team with a score of 343. The Wolves were paced by Nick Horton in 41st.

Charlie Kleeman’s 21st-place finish was the best among Aurora individuals and helped Smoky Hill to 14th with a score of 371, while Frank Morton’s 25th was the top result for 20th-place Regis Jesuit.

Thirty teams also competed in the boys race and Fairview, Cherry Creek and Monarch took the top three slots.
