Cross Country: Ninth-place finishes by Gilmore, Chavez pace Vista PEAK at Colorado 7 League meet

ELIZABETH | The Vista PEAK cross country made a step forward at this season’s Colorado 7 League Championship cross country meet, rising in the boys case and in the girls case getting a team score at all.

A season after the Bison didn’t have the five finishers needed to get a team score on the girls side, Vista PEAK finished third among the six teams in the field for the league meet on Thursday at Elizabeth High School, with senior Imelda Chavez’s ninth-place finish leading the way.

Chavez ran a time of 22 minutes, 1.60 seconds to come in behind a slew of runners from Elizabeth, which had runners finish in the top four spots and cruised to the league championship with a score of just 17 points. Fort Morgan came next with 57 points, followed by the Bison with 78.

Sophomore Sarah Machacek added a 13th-place finish and sophomore Patricia Ruiz and senior Lilia Chavez cross the finish line in 16th and 17th, respectively, to help Vista PEAK to its finish.

Junior Niles Gilmore equalled Chavez on the boys side for Vista PEAK with a ninth-place finish — one better than he posted a year ago — in a time of 19:20.60.

Sophomore Bailey Murphy made a big jump in his second league race, improving from 29th to 17th and dropping 23 seconds from his time.

The Bison boys’ total of 99 points brought them in fourth behind Fort Morgan (26), Elizabeth (32) and Alameda International (92).

Vista PEAK heads to the Class 4A Region 3 race on Oct. 22 at Lyons High School, where it will take on a field of 13 other teams (Centaurus, Denver North, Denver South, Denver West, Erie, Frederick, Holy Family, John F. Kennedy, Niwot, Skyview, Standley Lake, Thomas Jefferson at Weld Central) with attempts to qualify for the 4A state meet.
