COLORADO SPRINGS | The view from the medal podium looked the same the second time around for Grandview’s Erin Norton, but the result was much different.

Norton posted the first all-state finish in program history last season with her sixth-place finish in the Class 5A girls state cross country race and she bettered herself Saturday with a third-place finish on a familiar course at the Norris Penrose Equestrian Center.

Crossing the finish line in 19 minutes, 5.6 seconds, Norton finished only behind freshman Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins and Boulder’s Erin McLaughlin to cap her prep cross country career. She had a goal of 19:10 coming into the race and beat it with a strong surge to the finish line.

Despite Norton’s finish, the Wolves came in just behind Regis Jesuit — which also beat them at the Region 2 meet a week earlier — for Aurora’s best team finish. The Raiders — led by freshman Julia Vitella’s 18th place — came in seventh with 290 points, followed by Grandview with 298.

Behind Norton among city individuals came Smoky Hill senior Chloe Andrie in 16th place, along with junior Brynell Yount in 22nd. The Buffaloes ended up in 13th, followed by Amy McConnell-led Cherokee Trail in 17th.

Eaglecrest senior Alicia Taurchini ran her fourth career state race and posted her second-best result by crossing the line in 77th place.
