AURORA | In a wrestling season in which forfeits are plentiful and quality matches are at a premium, three Aurora teams got in decent amount of action Monday night on the mats at Rangeview High School.
Vista PEAK and Overland joined the host Raiders for an all-Aurora triangular and the Bison ended up on top in both the duals with the Trailblazers (36-27) and Rangeview (42-30), which were contested in front of a small group of spectators for the first all season in an Aurora Public Schools gym.
Coach David Benedict’s Vista PEAK team opened the night with a quick win by fall from senior Donovan Jarmon, the No. 3-ranked 220-pounder in Class 4A by On The Mat, in his match against Overland and also got a win by fall from Ezekiel Taylor, while the Bison also went 3-1 in extra non-scored matches between the teams. Heavyweight Justin Leadens recorded a win by fall in the nightcap for Vista PEAK against Rangeview.
Coach Ruben Medina’s Rangeview team split its duals, but suffered just one loss in matches that were actually contested and scored. The Raiders had three wrestlers win both of their matches by fall in senior Romeo Cortez at 152 pounds, junior Jaylen Banister at 170 pounds and sophomore Greg Brooks at 182 pounds.
Banister’s performance was the most remarkable, given that he trailed in both of his matches before winning by fall. He faced a significant deficit against Overland junior Ryan Hensley — who is ranked No. 4 in 5A at 160 pounds — but rallied for a pin that sent his team into jubilant celebration.
James Rada Scales’ decision at 138 pounds and Hensley’s pin at 160 in the dual match with Vista PEAK represented the lone wins in a scored match for coach Carter Krueger’s Overland team, which received five forfeits.
