AURORA | An anticipated state championship rematch didn’t happen, but Thursday’s Centennial League boys wrestling dual between rivals Cherokee Trail and Grandview still proved entertaining.

Derek Glenn Jr. of Cherokee Trail and Grandview’s Frankie Sanchez Jr. — who squared off for last season’s Class 106-pound title (won by Glenn Jr.) — did not meet at 113 pounds, though they came into the match ranked Nos. 2 and 3 at the weight by On The Mat.

Sanchez Jr. wrestled at 120 pounds and recorded one of eight wins by fall on the night for coach Ryan Budd’s Wolves, who came away with a 50-26 victory in a rare dual match that saw matches contested in all 14 weight classes.

Glenn Jr. recorded a pin at 113 pounds, which followed Jay Everhart’s pin at 106 pounds and gave coach Jeff Buck’s Cougars a strong start, but they won just two of the subsequent 12 matches. A big result for Cherokee Trail came at 152 pounds when Matthew Buck posted a 9-1 major decision win over Grandview sophomore Sonny Quintana, who was a placer at last season’s 5A state tournament.
