DENVER | Moved away from the Gates Tennis Center to make sure matches got in before inclement weather, Regis Jesuit’s doubles teams took the City Park courts by storm Thursday.
On a day that saw the first two rounds of the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament completed crisply at both venues, the Raiders saw three of their four doubles teams advance to the semifinal round scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday — weather permitting — at Gates Tennis Center.
The No. 2 team of Alec Jotte and Joey Robertson, the No. 3 duo of Truett Davis and Steven Bummer and the No. 4 tandem of Luca Abbott and Max Koszowski each posted a pair of wins at City Park to move within one victory of getting a shot at a state championship on Saturday.
Regis Jesuit’s fourth doubles team — the No. 1 team of Tommy Koszowski and Patrick Seby — is also still alive, though the Raiders need Fossil Ridge’s Max Weiner and Nick Hoime to win in the semifinals to earn a playback.
The Raiders’ two singles qualifiers, Trace Collins at No. 2 and Erich Nuss at No. 3, each lost in the first round with Collins set up for a potential playback with one more win by Boulder’s Jackson Hawk.
Cherokee Trail’s one singles player and three doubles teams came away winless from the opening day of the tournament and only the No. 1 doubles team of Vik Sheverda and Tanner Ford have the chance for a payback if the team they lost to in the first round can advance to the finals.
Grandview’s lone qualifier, the No. 2 doubles team of Chris Burris and Matthew Yan, can also get a playback if Jotte and Robertson win their way into the championship match.
