AURORA | The Regis Jesuit boys tennis team honored its seniors before its final dual match of the regular season Thursday, but the team’s younger players stepped up to help the Raiders win the Continental League championship.

Coach Laura Jones’ Regis Jesuit team swept the four doubles matches and also got a No. 3 singles victory from senior Chanon Penvari to post a 5-2 home court victory over Heritage in a battle of teams that both came into the finale undefeated in league play.

With the victory, the Raiders won hosting duties for the Class 5A Region 5 tournament, which is scheduled for Oct. 7-8 at Colorado Athletic Club-Monaco, while Heritage is set to play host to Region 7 Oct. 6-7 at Pinehurst and Ken Caryl.

In the two tightest matches of the day, Regis Jesuit senior brothers Tommy and Max Koszowski at No. 1 and No. 2 singles both lost matches that both went two sets, but each had at least one tiebreak. Both of Tommy Koszowski’s sets went to tiebreaks with Heritage sophomore Skyler Gates, who managed to claim both of them to earn the victory, while Max Koszowski dropped a tiebreak in the first set to the Eagles’ Jack Alexander, who won a close 6-4 second set.

Penvari downed Heritage’s Ben Blea 7-5, 6-1 to get the Raiders on the scoreboard in the singles column.

Underclassmen played roles in all four doubles victories, as junior Erich Nuss teamed with senior Steven Bummer for a 6-2, 6-4 victory, junior Luca Abbott and sophomore Patrick Seby produced a 6-3, 6-1 win, freshmen Kosta Garger and Evan Nuss combined for a 6-2, 6-4 triumph and sophomore Matt McCarthy and Will Dennen contributed a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Regis Jesuit’s regional field includes two other Aurora teams from the Centennial League — third-place Cherokee Trail and sixth-place Smoky Hill — along with George Washington (the No. 2 team from the Denver Prep League), Ralston Valley (No. 4 from Jeffco), Rock Canyon (No. 8 from the Continental), Loveland (No. 12 from the Front Range) and Fountain-Fort Carson, the No. 7 seed from the Colorado Springs Metro League.
